Republic that occupies the southeastern part of the Caucasian region. It consists of the mainland facing the west coast of the Caspian Sea and an enclave surrounded by Iran and Armenia (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic). The residence of Turkish Azerbaijani. Many of the residents are Muslims. The official language is Azerbaijani, but Russian is also used.
