Originates from central Mie Prefecture (formerly Ise Province). A place name recorded in the Asuka Period. The place name was also written “Ise. It means “Fujiwara clan of Ise Province. The name was given in the Heian period (794-1185) from the same place. The Fujiwara are said to be pioneers in Jizo, Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture; Odari, Yokoshibamitsu-cho, Yamato-gun, Chiba Prefecture; Serikawa-cho, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture; Yoneya Yamazaki, Towa-machi, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture; and Fujita-buro, Kakuda City, Miyagi Prefecture. Ito and Ito-cho, Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, are via places. The name of the place was recorded in the Edo period. It is said that the name of the place is derived from the name of the developer, Mr. Ito. Ito-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture was named in 1899 after Hirobumi Ito, a politician of the Tokyo era.
Variant of Ito. In Kamiamada, Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, it is said to be descended from the Ito clan who came from Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, in the Nanbokucho Period.
