The meaning of this symbol is “If one person serves all people and all people serve one person, the people under the heaven will be happy (yoshi).
Ishida Mitsunari was favored by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, then lord of Nagahama Castle, and became his subordinate. After Nobunaga Oda died in the Honnoji Incident, Hideyoshi became the ruler of Japan, and Sansei eventually rose to the position of “Five Magistrates” under Hideyoshi.
After Hideyoshi’s death, Tokugawa Ieyasu began to make moves to become the next ruler of Japan, but Sansei, who had continued to support the Toyotomi family, stood up and challenged Ieyasu to a battle in order to prevent Ieyasu from taking over the reigns of Japan out of loyalty. This is the famous “Battle of Sekigahara”.
